Duke’s Brew and Que
33 Downham Road

Following our previous post on “Burgers”, you can tell
that Lauren and I are in full swing of choosing to cook mouth-watering summer
delights! It should come as no surprise then
that I have been craving more BBQ food in this glorious weather. My work colleague had been for dinner at Duke’s
Brew and Que and raved about it, so Nia and I decided to check what all the
fuss was about – one look at the menu and immediately we booked a table for
Sunday dinner when her boyfriend was down.
Hawk eyes were on the ribs for sure! I’ve been lucky enough to go to Toronto Rib
Fest (one of the perks of having my brother live in Canada has to be his desire
to show off their cosmic food culture) and was keen to see if England has
anything to match. It definitely does,
and I may even go as far to say I enjoyed these ribs more (just don’t tell him
that)! Duke’s beef ribs are featured in
Time Out’s Top 10 dishes in London, and were also nominated for the Eating and
Drinking Awards 2012 – expectations weren’t too high of course!

We ventured to Haggerston and meandered our way through
the unfamiliar streets to Duke’s, a quaint and subtle meat restaurant. The instant smell of BBQ’d food was insane; I
was desperate to get in and try the ribs. Gwyn went for the Greatest Hits BBQ platter (not
one for the faint-hearted), and Nia and I splurged on baby-back ribs. We debated as to whether to have a side, choosing
not to, and were glad of this. The ribs
were rich and oozing in flavour, with no need to be adulterated by anything. There were simply no words (quite literally
none of us spoke a word as we ate since it was THAT good); I have not been so
happy with a plate of food in a very long time.
If we hadn’t opted for dessert I would have ordered a second lot! Dessert was fantastic but being quite full we
split a molasses tart between us, knowing that we will without doubt be heading
back soon to try more!!
Would I recommend going?
If you haven’t already booked your table, go and do so
now!
